33ft Whitby Coble - 'Njord'

This particular Coble belongs to my Mate's Dad, many happy and sometimes drunken afternoons have been spent on her doing a spot of fishing. The details of the boat are below:

Built: 1966, Clarksons Of Whitby (Billy Clarkson)

Engine: Ford 4D (4L Diesel 80-90bhp)

Speed: 8-10 Knots

Length: 33ft

Beam: 9ft (Including Gunwhales)

Displacement: 4.5 Tonnes

Construction: Larch & Oak (Clinker Built)

Owner: Mr. R Suggitt (Hartlepool)

Clarkson's Boat Builders - Whitby

Njord has an interesting history, she was ordered by Leeds University to use as a research boat along the Yorkshire Coast. Money was thrown at her and it's believed she took over a year to build. Extensive records were kept on her exact whereabouts during the time the university owned her. She was eventually sold to a guy who used her for potting and many years later, my Friend's Dad purchased her.

No true plans for a coble exist as each one is different. They were custom made to fisherman's requirments, all built by eye and using templates and jigs. I find it truely remarkable how cobles were made as I personally think they are a complicated boat in the shapes, profile and sweep. Cobles were made along the north east coast well before Billy was born, but their size and shape altered significantly when the 'modern' coble was equipped with an engine.

I find it sad this craft has been all but lost in the realms of time but at the same time find it simply unbelievable that during the cobles construction, no plans were ever officially drawn up. You have to think, at this time, the space age was kicking off with numerous satellites going into orbit and what not so it's not as if drawings were a new concept.
